One of the main features of the WEA is that it's a college without classrooms. This often seems a bit odd to people when they first meet us, "But where are you?" they ask. And the answer, on the Essex Outreach Programme anyway, is that we're where anybody wants us & so we're in family centres and refuges, hostels, school IT rooms and church halls. All these places are places that our partner organisations suggest as being both convenient for the people they work with and places where they will feel comfortable while they learn. Lots of them also need to have facilities for a crèche. Our partners do far more than provide accommodation - we couldn't function without them. Sometimes they help with childcare, sometimes they help with transport, some even help with money. But the essential thing they do is to tell the people that they work with about the WEA courses and they tell us at the WEA what they think their people would like to learn. Have you thought of volunteering? Lots of our partners are voluntary organisations who need helpers to help other people. Click here for more information about volunteering.
We work with many of the women's refuges in Essex. To find more about the National Women's Aid movement go to www.womensaid.org.uk |
